Danish Anyone?

When I first moved to Atlanta (about 4 months ago), I went out on an online date with a guy from Denmark (the Great Dane).  We hit it off right away.  I knew it the minute I laid eyes on him.  But about half-way through our date, he told me that he was going back to Denmark at the end of July.

Well, I’ve had enough experience to know that getting involved with someone for 3 months, only to see them leave, is the path to heartbreak city.  So I told him that I thought it best that we keep things platonic-  to mainly save me the emotional distress that would inevitably occur.  He begged, he pleaded, but I was rather firm that we just keep things friendly, nothing more.

Well, the Dane was disheartened and I got the feeling that it was his way or the highway.  So we lost touch for a while, and then we resumed email, some texting and a quick phone conversation here and there.  Trouble is, I always liked the Dane but was trying to avoid getting attached.  But he thought I just didn’t want to see him anymore…  So he decided that he would go travel for a couple of months to Mexico and Cuba before leaving for Denmark.

Well, last night, the Dane came back.  And he leaves for Denmark on Sunday.  And I leave for vacation today.  So we got to spend one evening together.  And I have to say, it was quite a magical evening.  There are some people that you just “get” from the first moment you meet them.  Things just click.  And that is how we are together.  I had to say goodbye to the Dane late last night and it made me quite sad.  Connections like that don’t come around very often, so I really do cherish them when I find them.  Perhaps our paths will cross again……you never know…..

Hey, I’m a HUGE believer in fate. Of course, I’m also a huge believer in when the opportunity comes, go with your gut and grab it if you want it. Yet, when it comes to relationships, I find that if things are really meant to work out, they will. I took a huge leap in my own relationship and now the payoff is wonderful. I met a Frenchman via match.com when I lived in SF, he didn’t know that it was going to happen at the time, but the US Embassy didn’t extend J visa (student visa). So, three months after we met and hit it off, his employer had to send him to their UK branch until they were able to submit an application for a H1B visa. He asked me to go with him. I gave up my job, my apartment and my wonderful life in San Fran to follow my heart. It was the easiest decision b/c everything just fell into place (exception of when I was initially denied entry into the UK by Heathrow’s Immigration Officers) after a few months and here we are…still together and still happy. If it is meant to be, there are no questions, you just do it. Of course, you need to know the person well and trust your gut. Whew…sorry for the long comment! Good luck in your search!
